3、eath,Merleau-Ponty’spresenceincontemporaryintellectuallifehasremainedstrangelyelusive.Hisinfluencehascutacrossdis-ciplinaryboundaries,yetithastendedtomovebeneaththesurfaceofmainstreamscholarlyandpopularintellectualdiscourse.Asaresult,perhapsunderstandab
4、ly,academicandnonacademicreadersalikehavebeenslowtoappreciatetherealdepthandsignif-icanceofMerleau-Ponty’sthought,whichcannotbeneatlypigeon-holedinfamiliarconceptualorhistoricalcategories.Hewasaphe-nomenologistaboveall,yethedifferedinfundamentalwaysfrom
5、thethreeothermajorphenomenologists,Husserl,Heidegger,andSartre.Unlikethesephilosophers,Merleau-Pontyavailedhimselfofempiricaldataandtheoreticalinsightsdrawnfromthebiologicalandsocialsciences,althoughhewasnotapsychologist,alinguist,orananthropologist.Hec
