2、rnodellaPiana,wasaCatholicandhadenjoyedasuccessfulcareerasasingeruntilthetimeofhermar-riagetoAdorno’sfather.(In1938AdornohadhisnamechangedfromWiesengrundtoAdorno.)Adornowasanonlychildinaquitewelloffhouseholdthathedescribedaspresidedoverbytwomothers.Hisother“mother”washismother’ssister,A
3、gatheCalvelli-Adorno.Shetoohadhadasuccessfulmusicalcareer,asapianist.Attheageoffifteen,AdornobeganweeklystudymeetingswithSiegfriedKracauer,amanfourteenyearshisseniorandtheneditoroftheliberalnewspaperFrankfurterZeitung.TheweeklymeetingscontinuedformanyyearsandhadKant’sCritiqueofPureReaso
4、nastheirfirstobjectofstudy.Adornolaterreportedthatheowedfarmoreofhisintellectualdevelopmenttothesemeetingsthantohisacademicteachers.AdornobeganhisuniversitystudiesinFrankfurtin1921,studyingphilosophy,sociology,music,andpsychology.ItwasduringthetimeofhisstudiesthatAdornometandbefriendedM
5、axHorkheimerandWalterBenjamin;thelatterwouldbecomees-peciallyinfluentialforAdorno’sphilosophicalwork.In1924Adornocompletedadoctorateinphilosophy.In1925hewenttoVienna,wherehestayedonandoffformonthsatatimethrough1927,withtheideaofcontinuinghismusicaltrainingandpossiblypursuingacareerasaco
