2、nesia,weremembersofaculturethatdiffersinanumberofwaysfromWesterncultures.InoneexperimentthesubjectsjudgedphotographsofJapaneseandAmericanfaces,bothmalesandfemales,whichshowedmanydifferentemotions.Therewasveryhighagreementaboutwhichexpressionssignaledcontemptinpreferencetoanger,disgust,happiness,s
3、adness,fear,orsurprise.InasecondexperimenttheIndonesiansubjectsjudgedexpres-sionsshownbymembersoftheirownculture,andagaintherewasveryhighagreementaboutwhichexpressionsignalscontempt.EkmanandFriesen(1986)identifiedaspecificfacialexpressionthatobserv-ersineachof10cultures,bothWesternandnon-Western,
4、agreedsignaledcontempt.Thiswasthefirststudyinwhichthelevelofagreementaboutacontemptexpressionwasveryhighineveryculturesampled-greaterthan75%.Althoughanumberofpriorinvestigatorshadincludedcontemptinthelistofemotionstheystudied,mosthadnotseparateditfromdisgustbutinsteadhadcombinedbothwordsintoonere
