2、ostatepreciselywhatmathematicalentitiesrePresentthesephysicalconcepts:abodyisregardedtobeasmoothmanifoldwhoseelementsarethematerialpoints;aconfigurationisdefinedasamappingofthebodyintoathree-dimensionalEuclideanspace,andaforcesystemisddfinedtobeavector-valuedfunctiondefi
3、nedforpairsofbodiesx.Oncetheseconceptsaremadepreciseonecanproceedtothestatementof-generalprinciples,suchastheprincipleofobjectivityorthelawofbalanceoflinearmomentum,andtothestatementofspecificconstitutiveassumptions,suchastheassertionthataforcesystemcanberesolvedintobody
4、forceswithamassdensityandcontactforceswithasurfacedensity,ortheassertionthatthecontactforcesatamaterialpointdependoncertainlocalpropertiesoftheconfigurationatthepoint.Whilethegeneralprinciplesarethesameforallworkinclassicalcontinuummechanics,theconstitutiveassumptionsvar
5、ywiththeapplicationinmindandservetodefinethematerialunderconsideration.Whenonehasstatedthemathematicalnatureofbodies,configurationsandforces,andhaslaiddownthewaysinwhichtheseconceptsoccurinthegeneralprinciplesandtheconstitut!veassumptions,thenthepropertiesoftheseconcepts
6、arefixed,andonecanpresentrigorousargumentswithoutrecourseto"operationaldefinitions"andothermetaphysicalparaphernalia,whichmaybeofsomeuseindecidingontheapplicabilityofatheorytoaspecificphysicalsituationbutseemtohavenoplaceinitsmathematicaldevelopment.Todiscussthethermodyn
7、amicsofcontinua,itappearsthattotheconceptsofcontinuummechanicsonemustaddfivenewbasicconcepts:thesearetem-perature,specificinternalenergy~,specificentropya,heatflux,andheatsupply4(duetoradiation).Oncemechanicsisaxiomatized,itiseasytogivethemathe-maticalentitiesrepresentin
