2、ABSTRACTTheelasticmodulusEofdiamondisoftensetequalto1/s11--1050GPa,whichassumesthatitdoesnotvarymuchwithorientation,andmanyauthorsuse~---0.2asanappropriateaveragevalueofPoisson'sratio,whichisincorrect.Inthispaper,weshowthat,sincetheelasticconstantsofdiamondareknownwithgreataccurac
3、y,itisastraightforwardmattertoderiveexactnumbersforEand~thattakeintoconsiderationthestressdirection,theintrinsicanisotropy,aswellasthecrystallineconfiguration.FortexturedCVDdiamonddeposits,wefindthat,inafirstapproximation,theHershey-Kr6ner-Eshelbyaveragingprocedureyieldsacceptable
4、numbers,E--1143GPaand~--0.0691,whicharequitecompatiblewithavailableexperimentalevidence;thisconfirmsthathigh-qualitydepositshaveelasticconstantssimilartothoseofsingle-crystalnaturaldiamond.MATERIALSINDEX:diamondIntroductionThesuccessfulsynthesisofdiamondbymeansofchemicalvapordepos
5、ition{CVD)techniqueshasstimulatedenormousinterestinpotentialapplicationsofdiamondforavarietyofengineeringtasks.Manyoftheseapplicationsinvolveevaluatingthermallyormechanicallyinducedstresses,whichrequiresapropercharacterizationoftheelasticproperties,i.e.,Young'smodulusEandPoisson's
6、14071408C.A.KLEINVol.27,No.12ratiov.Inthisregard,itiscommonlyassumedthatthemodulusofdiamondcanbesetequalto1050GPasince"Edoesnotvarygreatlywithorientation"[1];furthermore,ithasbeenstated[1]andgenerallyacceptedthat"vvariesbetween0.1and0.29{V=0.2),"whichisincorrect.Infact,sincetheela
7、sticconstantsofdiamondareknownwithgreataccuracy{seeTable1),itisastraightforwardmattertodescribetheelasticbehavior,whichincludesassessingthedirectionalityofEandinsinglecrystalsaswellasobtainingtheelasticcoefficientsofCVDdepositsthatmayexhibitcrystallographictexture.Inthispaper,wewi
