2、actHowquicklydolistenersrecognizeemotionsfromaspeaker’svoice,anddoesthetimecourseforrecognitionvarybyemotiontype?Toaddressthesequestions,weadaptedtheauditorygatingparadigmtoestimatehowmuchvocalinformationisneededforlistenerstocategorizefivebasicemotions(anger,disgust,fear,sadne
3、ss,happiness)andneutralutterancesproducedbymaleandfemalespeakersofEnglish.Semantically-anomalouspseudo-utterances(e.g.,Therivixjolledthesilling)conveyingeachemotionweredividedintosevengateintervalsaccordingtothenumberofsyllablesthatlistenersheardfromsentenceonset.Participants(n
4、=48)judgedtheemotionalmeaningofstimulipresentedateachgatedurationinterval,inasuccessive,blockedpresentationformat.Analyseslookedathowrecognitionofeachemotionevolvesasanutteranceunfoldsandestimatedthe‘‘identificationpoint’’foreachemotion.Resultsshowedthatanger,sadness,fear,andne
5、utralexpressionsarerecognizedmoreaccuratelyatshortgateintervalsthanhappiness,andparticularlydisgust;however,asspeechunfolds,recognitionofhappinessimprovessignificantlytowardstheendoftheutterance(andfearisrecognizedmoreaccuratelythanotheremotions).Whenthegateassociatedwiththeemo
6、tionidentificationpointofeachstimuluswascalculated,dataindicatedthatfear(M=517ms),sadness(M=576ms),andneutral(M=510ms)expressionswereidentifiedfromshorteracousticeventsthantheotheremotions.Thesedatarevealdifferencesintheunderlyingtimecourseforconsciousrecognitionofbasicemotions
