2、ealizethatbiologydidnotexistthen,andthatthepatternofknowledgethathasbeenfamiliartousforahundredandfiftyyearsisnotvalidforapreviousperiod.Andthat,ifbiologywasunknown,therewasaverysimplereasonforit:thatlifeitselfdidnotexist.Allthatexistedwaslivingbeings,wh
3、ichwereviewedthroughagridofknowledgeconstitutedbynaturalhistory.1IncontemporaryWesternscholarship,theconceptof“EsotericBud-dhism”hasbecomepartofathree-foldgridofknowledgedeployedtodescribethehistoryofBuddhism.Forinstance,TheEncyclopediaofReli-gionpresent
4、sthreegeneralessaystitled:“Hinayana,”“Mahayana,”and“EsotericBuddhism.”2Inthiscasetheclassification“EsotericBuddhism”isclearlyaeuphemismandreplacementtermfor“BuddhistTantrism”or“TantricBuddhism,”aproblematicclassificationrepeatedlyshownbyscholarsinrecenty
