4、heimplicationsoftheselegalallocationsforvariousformsofsocialcapital.Thefirstquestionwhichmustbeanswerediswhatismeantby"socialcapital."Theconceptsoffinancialcapital,physicalcapital,andhumancapitalarewellknown,buttheideaofsocialcapitalrequiressomeexplanation.Perhapsthebestwayto

5、illustratethisconceptistoreportontheresultsofsomerecentresearchonschoolsthathasstimulatedmyinterestinwhatIhavecalled"socialcapital."Overthecourseofthepastseveralyears,Ihavecon-ductedresearchontheimpactofpublicandprivatehighschoolsonstudentsattendingthoseschools.Mycolleaguesan

6、dIexaminedpublicschools,Catholicschools,andother,mostlynon-religious,privateschoolsusinganationalsampleofoverathousandhighschools.Wefirstexaminedthescoresofstudentsfromeachtypeofschoolonstandardizedtestsandarrivedattheconclusionthatprivateschools,particu-larlyCatholicschools,

7、producedsomewhathigherachieve-mentscoresinverbalandmathematicalskills(thoughnotinscience)thandidthepublicschools.Thatis,achievementwashighernotmerelyamongthestudentsastheyexistedinthepublicandprivatesectors,buteveniftheCatholicschoolshadthesamedistributionofstudentsfoundinthe

8、publicschools,theaverageachievementofstudentsinCatholicschoolswouldb
