2、icalworld,theprotectionoftheelectricalnetworkitselfisjustasimportantastheprotectionoftheindividualelementsthatmakeupthenetwork.RemedialActionSchemes(RAS)aredesignedtomonitorandprotectelectricalsystemsbyautomaticallyperformingswitchingoperationsinresponsetoadversenetworkconditionstoensuretheintegrity

3、oftheelectricalsystemandavoidnetworkcollapse.ThispaperexaminesonesuchsystemdevelopedtoprotectaportionofanelectricalnetworkinthesoutherninteriorofBritishColumbia,Canada.ThesystemutilizesanumberofdifferentIntelligentElectronicDevices(IEDs)interconnectedusingavarietyofnetworkingandcommunicationsystemst

4、oformanintegratedschemecapableofperformingautomatedsheddingofloadandgenerationtoavoidcollapseoftheregionalelectricalnetwork.Thepaperoutlinesthedesignofthissystem,beginningwithcomprehensivesystemstudiesperformedtoexamineanddeterminetherequirementsoftheRAS.Theimplementationofthesystemisdiscussedinclud

5、ingthearchitectureofthesystemaswellastheselectionofIEDsusedandtheroleeachplaysintheoverallscheme.Finally,themethodsemployedtocommissiontheschemearealsoprovided.2IntroductionInthesoutherninteriorofBritishColumbia,Canada,naturalresourcecompanyTeckComincoMetalsLimited(TCML)operatesanelectricalpowersyst

6、emthatconsistsofaloadofapproximately220MWatitssmeltingoperationsinTrail,BCandahydrogeneratingstationwithacapacityofapproximately400MWlocatedsome15kmawayatWaneta.ThissystemisconnectedtotheWesternGridthroughinterconnectionswithadjacentutilities.Theseinterconnectionscomprise230kVand63kVconnectionswithF
