4、icalscientiststhatinstitutionslikecentralizedwagebargain-ingandfactorslikegovernmentpartisanshiparecorrelatedwithdifferencesinincomeinequalitybetweenadvancedindustrialcountries.Thereisempiricalevidencefortheperiodsince1970tosupporteachofthesepropositions.Wemakeuseofnewdataontopincomeshares
5、toexaminetheeffectsofpartisanshipandwagebargainingoveramuchlongertimeperiod,nearlytheentiretwentiethcentury.Ourempiricalresultsprovidelittlesupportfortheideathateitherofthesetwofactorsiscorrelatedwithincomeinequalityoverthisperiod.Wethenshowthatacloserlookattheintroductionofcentralizedwage
6、bargaininginindividualcountriesduringthe1930sand1940srevealsthatincountriesthatmovedtocentralizewagebargaining,incomeinequalitywasalreadytrendingdownwardwellbeforetheinstitutionalchange,andthemovetocentralizedbargainingdidnotalterthistrend.Ourresultssuggestthattherewerealternativeinstitut
7、ionalpathstoreducedincomeinequalityduringmostofthetwentiethcentury.Thisraisesthepos-sibilitythatcommonlysharedeconomicandpoliticalevents,suchasworldwarsandeconomiccrises,mayultimatelybemoreimportantforunderstandingtheevolutionofincomeinequalitythanaretheinstitutiona
