3、andhalf(e.g.ahalfhourvs.halfanhour).Morespecificresearchquestionsconcernstheoverallfrequencydistributionofthevariants,howtheyaredistrib-utedacrossregionsandmediaandwhatlinguisticfactorsinfluencethechoiceofvariant.Thestudyisbasedoncorpusmaterialcomprisingthreenewspapersfrom1
4、995(TheIndependent,TheNewYorkTimesandTheSydneyMorningHerald)andtwospokencorpora(thedialoguecomponentoftheBNCandtheLongmanSpokenAmericanCorpus).Thebookpresentsanumberofpreviouslynotdiscussedissueswithrespecttoall,whole,bothandhalf.Thestudyofdistributionshowsthatoneformoftenp
5、redominatedgreatlyovertheother(s)andthattherewereseveralcasesofre-gionalvariation.Anumberoflinguisticfactorsfurtherseemtobeinvolvedforeachofthevariablesanalysed,suchasthesyntacticfunctionofthenounphraseandthepresenceofcertainelementsintheNPoritsnearco-text.Foreachofthevaria
6、bles,allfactorswererankedaccordingtotheirstrengthofcorrelationwithparticularvariants.Thestudyalsodiscussesapossiblegrammaticalisationproc-essconcerningNPswithhalfandthepossibilityofallsometimeshavinganotherfunctionthanexpressingtotality:toexpresslargequantity.Thewholeideaof
7、grammaticalsynonymyhasbeenquestionedbysomescholars,buttheconclusiondrawninthepresentstudyisthattherearevariablesthatareatleastveryclosetoeachotherinmeaning,andthatanumberoflinguis-ticandnon-linguisticfactorsinfluenceourchoicesofvariant.Agreatdealoftheinformationobtainedwast
