4、setoexpressiveprosody.Althoforceofarticulationistheprimarymediumthruwhichthestressphonemesareexternalized,thisphoneticfeatureisnottheexclusivemediumofstress.Asyllablewithagivenstressphonememaybepronouncedwithstrikinglydifferentdegreesofarticulatoryforce.Thus,thefirstsyl

5、lableincompensationis,undercomparableconditions,lighterinstressthanthefirstsyllableofcompromise;butwhentheformerwordispronouncedinaloudtoneofvoiceandonahighpitch,itsfirstsyllablemaycarryastrongerforceofarticula•tionthantheinitialofthelatter.Thedegreeofarticulatoryforcew

6、ithwhichagivenstresstypemaybepronouncedisarelativematter,dependingontheaccentualcontextinwhichitoccurs.Thefieldofexpressiveprosodyisawideanddifficultone.Apersonwhoisnativetothelanguagelearnstoevaluatecertainaccentualpeculiaritiesasmarksofaspeaker'spersonality:therearepe
