2、002;revised18June2002;accepted3July2002;published30January2003.[1]Ramanspectroscopyisapowerfultoolformineralcharacterizationandfordetectionofwaterandorganicandinorganicformsofcarbon.TheMarsmicrobeamRamanspectrometer(MMRS)isdesignedforclose-upanalysisofrocksandsoilsinplanetarysurfaceexploration.The
3、MMRSconsistsofaprobe(inaflightunittobedeployedbyaroboticarm)andaspectrograph,lasersource,andelectronics(inaflightunittoresideonaroverorlander).TheRamanprobehasascanningopticalbenchthatenablesa1-cmlineartraverseacrossatargetrockorsoil,bothontargetmaterialsasencounteredandonfreshsurfacesofrocksexpos
4、edbyabrasionorcoring.Fromthesespectra,onecanidentifymajor,minor,andtraceminerals,obtaintheirapproximaterelativeproportions,anddeterminechemicalfeatures(e.g.,Mg/Feratio)androcktexturalfeatures(e.g.,mineralclusters,amygdularfill,andveins).Onecanalsodetectandidentifyorganicspecies,graphiticcarbon,and
5、water-bearingphases.ExtensiveperformancetestshavebeendoneonabrassboardmodeloftheMMRSusingavarietyofgeologicalmaterials(minerals,rocks,Martianmeteorites,etc.).ThesetestsshowthataRamanspectrometercanbebuiltthatissuitablyminiaturized,sufficientlyrobust,andlowenoughinpowerusagetoserveasanon-surfacepla
