1、AProposaltoMovefromtheLEPTopologicaltoanLHCFunctionalControlSystemArchitectureMichelRabanyCERN/ATDivision,1211Geneva23AbstractOurknowledgeofthefundamentalparticlesofmatterisgovernedbytheavailableparticleenergyinaccelerators.Inordertoaddressthisissue,andphysicistshavebeen

2、designingeverlargeracceleratorsandcollidersforthelastfortyyearsengineers.Thishasledtoincreasingcomplexityofboththecomponentsandthecontrolsignalsthathavetoberelayedtoandfromanoperationscentre.Whereassimplecablingwasmorethansufficientfortheearlyaccelerators,distributedcont

3、rolsystemsarenowessentialforlargeaccelerators.AtCERN,suchdevelopmentswerepioneeredbydistributingcomputersaroundtheSPSaccelerator,whichweretheninterconnectedthroughproprietarycommunicationlinks.NetworkingwithanemergingTokenRingwasamajorbreakthroughfortheLEPcollider.Whilet

4、heevolutionofacceleratorcontrolsystemshasmatchedtheprogressoftechnology,industryhas,foritspart,developedveryattractivegenericsolutionstomeettheneedsofmanufacturersforautomation,controlandsupervision.Theclearadvantagesofindustrialcontrolsolutionsintoday'seconomicclimatele

5、adustoconsidertheirintegrationintomodernacceleratorsystems.FollowingananalysisoftheactualLEPcontrolsystem,anevolutionofitsarchitectureisproposedforthecontroloftheLHC.INTRODUCTIONDuringthe1960’s,theeverincreasingneedfordataprocessingwasanincentiveforthedevelopmentofcomput

6、ertechnology.Experimentalphysicsiscertainlyoneofthemostdemandingapplicationsinthisrespect.Concurrently,theeverincreasingneedforenergyinthecollisionofparticlesleadstothedevelopmentofeverlargeraccelerators.Acceleratorcontrolrequirescommunicationwiththeequipmentfromanoperat

7、ionscentre,inthesamewaythatmusiciansinanorchestraneedtheirconductor.Theeconomicnecessityofreducingthenumbersandthesizesofthecablestoreasonabledimensionsledtotoday’sdistributedcomputercontrolarchitecture.Ourpioneeringactivityinthisdomainshelteredusfromtheoutsideevolution,
