2、irpartinthelifeoftheUnitedStates,andthathereIam,anEnglishman,welcomedinyourmidst,makesthisexperienceoneofthemostmovingandthrillinginmylife,whichisalreadylongandhasnotbeenentirelyuneventful.I--Iwish--Iwishindeedthatmymother,whosememoryIcherishacrossthevaleofyears,
3、couldhavebeenheretosee.Andbytheway,IcannothelpreflectingthatifmyfatherhadbeenAmericanandmymotherBritish,insteadoftheotherwayaround,Imighthavegothereonmyown.Inthatcase,thiswouldnothavebeenthefirsttimeyouwouldhaveheardmyvoice.InthatcaseIshouldnothaveneededanyinvita
4、tion;butifIhad,itishardlylikelythatitwouldhavebeenunanimous.Soperhapsthingsarebetterastheyare.Imayconfess,however,thatIdonotfeelquitelikeafishoutofwaterinalegislativeassemblywhereEnglishisspoken.IamachildoftheHouseofCommons.Iwasbroughtupinmyfather'shousetobelieve
