3、etothecampusonceagain.SomemayrecallthatlasttimeIwashereIwasjoinedbyadearfriendandagiantofAmericanpolitics.SenatorEdwardKennedy.Teddy’snotheretightnow,buthislegacyofcivilrightsandhealthcareandworkerprotectionsisstillwithus.IwasacandidateforPresidentthatdayandsomema

4、yrecallIarguedthatourcountryhadreachedatippingpointthatafteryearsinwhichwehaddeferredourmostpressingproblemsandtoooftenyieldedtothepoliticsofthemoment.Wenowfacedachoice.Wecouldsquarelyconfrontourchallengeswithhonestyanddeterminationorwecouldconsignourselvesandourc

5、hildrentoafuturelessprosperousandlesssecure.IbelievedthatthenandIbelieveitnowandthat’swhyevenaswe’vetackledthemostsevereeconomiccrisissincetheGreatDepression,evenaswe’vewounddownthewariniraqandrefocusedoureffortsinAfghanistan,myadministrationhasrefusedtoignore,som

6、eofthefundamentalchallengesfacingthisgeneration.Welaunchedthemostaggressiveeducationreformsindecades.Sothatourchildrencangaintheknowledgeandskillstheyneedtocompetein21stcenturyglobaleconomy.Wehavefinallydeliveredonthepromiseofhealthreform,reformthatwillbringgreate

7、rsecuritytoeveryAmericanandthatwillreinintheskyrocketingcoststhatthreatenfamilies,businessesandtheprosperityofournation.We’reonthevergeofreforminganoutdatedandineffectivesetofrulesgoverningWallStreet,togivegreaterpowertoconsumersandpreventtherecklessfinancialspecu

8、lationthatledtothissevererecession,andwe’veacceleratingthetransitiontoacleanenergyeconomybysignificantlyraisingthefuel-efficiencystandardsofcarsandtruck
