2、tudiesthathavehelpedshapethedisciplineandhavehadamajorimpactonitsdevelopment.AsChristianJarrett,authorofTheRoughGuidetoPsychology,hasnoted,“whileotherscienceshavetheircardi-naltheories…psychology’sfoundationsarebuiltnotoftheory,butwiththerockofclassic
3、experiments”(2008,p.756).Notsurprisingly,thestudiesthathavebeenselectedareverywellknownwithindevelopmentalpsychology.Theyallcontinuetobecitedinnewarticlesandtext-booksandtheireffectandinfluenceremainundiminished.Thestudieshavebeencarefullyselectedbyth
4、eeditorstorepresentarangeofareaswithindevelopmen-talpsychology:itislikelythatsomeofthemmaynothavebeenselectedbyadif-ferenteditorialteam,butwethinkthatmostofthemwould.STRUCTUREOFTHECHAPTERSAllofthechaptersbeginwithanaccountofthebackgroundtotheclassicst
5、udyorreview,inordertoplacethemwithintheirdevelopmentalandhistoricalcontext–identifyingtheconcernsandscientificperspectivesthatmotivatedtheresearchers.Thisisfollowedbyadescriptionoftheclassicpaper,whichinturnisfollowedbyadiscussionofthestudy’simpact,wh
6、ichlooksatwaysinwhichideasandfindingsweretakenupbyotherresearchersandwaysinwhichtheseconceptsanddatainfluencedthefieldofdevelopmentalpsychologyandhelpedtoshapeitsprog-ress.Howeverimportantaclassicstudymaybe,nopaperinpsychologycaneverbeconsideredperfec
