2、ryandthepoliticalscene.Faulknershowedsignsofartistictalentfromayoungage,butbecameboredwithhisclassesandneverfinishedhighschool.FaulknergrewupinthetownofOxford,Mississippi,andeventuallyreturnedthereinhislateryearsandpurchasedhisfamousestate,RowanOak.O

3、xfordwasfaulkner’sinspirationforthefictionaltownofJefferson,Mississippi,anditssurroundingYoknapatawphaCountry.Theselocalesbecamethesettingforanumberofhisworks.Faulkner’s“Yoknapatawphanovels”includetheSoundandtheFury(1929),AsILayDying(1930),LightinAug

4、ust(1932),Absalom,Absalom!(1936),TheHamlet(1940),andGoDown,Moses(1942),andtheyfeapuresomeofthesamecharactersandlocations.FaulknerwasparticularlyinterestedinthedeclineoftheDeepSouthaftertheCivilWar.ManyofhisnovelsexplorethedeteriorationoftheSouthernar

5、istocracyafterthedestructionofitswealthandwayoflifeduringtheCivilWarandReconstruction.Faulkner’sreputationasoneofthegreatestnovelistsofthetwentiethcenturyislargelyduetohishighlyexperimentalstyle.Faulknerwasapioneerinliterarymodernism,dramaticallydive

6、rgingfromtheformsandstructurestraditionallyusedinnovelsbeforehistime.Faulkneroftenemploysstreamofconsciousnessnarrative,discardsanynotionofchronologicalorder,usesmultiplenarrators,shiftsbetweenthepresentandthepasttense,andtendstowardimpossiblylongand

7、complexsentences.Forhiseffort,AsILayDyingwasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1949.HediedinMississippiin1962.Firstpublishedin1929,theSoundandtheFuryisrecognizedasoneofthemostsuccessfullyinnovativeandexperimentalAmericannovelsofitstime,nottomentionone
