3、etheatrestudentsofmygeneration,andmanyofmyclassmatesclaimedtohavebeenpresent,aschildren,atoneoranotheroftheseperformances.Theysaidthattheirparentshadtakenthem,thattheyhadwitnessedanunholyunionofrecitalandinsurrection,ofsexandbarbarism,andthattheyremained,howevermanyyearslater,unsettledande
4、veninspiredbythememory.Theywereallliars.Wewere,infact,studyingtobeliars.It’sbeennineyearssinceIgraduated,andIimaginethatthesedaysstudentsattheConservatorytalkaboutotherthings.Theyaretooyoungtorememberhowordinaryfearwasduringthewar.Perhapstheyfinditdifficulttoimagineatimewhentheatrewasimpro
5、visedinresponsetoterrifyingheadlines,atimewhendeliveringalineofdialoguewithachillingsenseofdreaddidnotevenrequireacting.But,then,sucharethenarcoticeffectsofpeace,andcertainlynoonewantstogobackward.Morethanadecadeafterthewar,Diciembrestillfunctionedasaloosegroupingofactorsandactresseswhoocc
6、asionallyputonashow,ofteninaprivatehome,towhichtheaudiencecamebyinvitationonly.Paradoxically,nowthattraveloutsidethecitywasrelativelysafe,theyhardlyeverwenttotheinterior,sowhenanewtourwasannouncedIauditionedeagerly.Itwasarareopportunity,and,tomysurprise,Igotthepart.Onlythreeofuswent—me,acu
