3、tatueofherstoodinthetown-hallofSyracuse.Unliketheworksofherfellowpoet, Alcaeus,Sappho'ssurvivingpoetryhasveryfewallusionstopoliticalconditions.TheprincipalexceptionisFragment98,whichmentionsexileandindicatesthatSapphowaslackingsomeofhercustomaryluxuries.Her
4、politicalsympathiesmayhavelainwiththepartyofAlcaeus. Thoughthereisnoexplicitrecordofthis,itisusuallyassumedthatSapphoreturnedfromexileatsomepointandthatshespentmostofherlifeinLesbos.DavidCampbellhasbrieflysummarizedsomeofthemostarrestingqualitiesofSappho'sp
