2、entionandtreatmenttechniquesbeatbackthemortalityfromtobaccouseandAIDS.Andnow,asan85-year-old,mylifehasbeenprolongedandkeptactivebywonderdrugsunknowntomyparents.Soit'sbeensomewhatsurprisinginthiseraoftriumphformodernmedicinetoseetherapidgrowthofalternative/complementarym
3、edicine,whichisusedbyasmanyasoneinthreeAmericans.Althoughmostofthosestillrefrainfrominformingtheirregularphysiciansaboutthatuse,thereisagrowingtendencyamongphysicianstoacknowledgeandevenembracecertainformsofalternative/complementarymedicine.Changesintheuseoftheterms"alt
4、ernative"and"complementary"suggesttheshapeofthisshift.Atfirst,itwascalledsimply"alternativemedicine,"reflectingadissatisfactionwithregularmedicineaswellasaculturalrebellionagainstthebiomedicalcommunity.Inmorerecentyears,severalstudiesindicatethattherehasbeenashiftfrom"a
5、lternative"therapiesto"complementary"therapies,adoptednotinoppositiontoregularmedicinebutinalliancewithit.Andincreasinglythosewhouseoneofthemanyformsofcomplementarymedicinearenottreatingaspecificmedicalproblem.Rather,theyarepracticingpreventioninwaystheyfindmorecongruen
6、twiththeirphilosophicalvaluesorlifestyle.NowIthinkwemaybeseeinganotherrefinement,onethatistakingusfrom"complementary"to"safeandeffective."Forsomepeople,theappealofalternativemedicineliesinitsalternativestance,andassomeofthesetherapiesenterthemainstream,someoftheseindivi
7、dualsmayseekotheralternativepractices.ButmoreandmoreAmericansaredemandinggreatercertaintyfromalternativeorcomplementaryproductsasanincreasingnumberofpressreportsdocumenthealthproblemsresultingfromcertainnaturalproductsandcomplementarypractices.Thus,thebaby-boomhealthcon
