2、nymous,Internet-basedquestionnairestudyontargetlanguage(TL)andfirstlanguage(L1)useinuniversity-levelforeignlanguage(FL)classes.Theparticipantswere600FLstudentsand163FLinstructors.ThegoalsofthestudyweretodeveloppreliminarycomponentsofadescriptivemodelofTLandL1useandexp
3、loretherelationshipsbetweenTLuseandstudentanxietyaboutTLuse.Itwashypothesizedthat(a)amountsofTLusewouldvaryaccordingtoconstellationofinterlocutorsandcommuni-cativecontexts,and(b)theamountofTLuseoverallwouldcorrelatepositivelywithstudentanxietyaboutit.Theresultssupport
4、thefirsthypothesis.Thesecondhypothesiswasnotsupported.AnalysisofthedatarevealedanegativerelationshipbetweenreportedamountsofTLuseandreportedTL-useanxiety.TenetsareofferedformaximizingTLusewhileatthesametimegrantingtoL1pedagogicallysoundfunctions.THEREARELIKELYFEWFOREI
