2、ltureetc.Asaresult,itisvirtuallyanurgentneedforustofindalanguageasaLinguaFranca.Asalanguagespokenbypeoplefromthemostcountriesallovertheworld,EnglishiseasilychosenasaLinguaFranca(LF).MichaelToolanreferstoEnglishasthe‘onlytrulygloballanguage’(Toolan1997citedinMcArthur2001).However,whetherEnglisha
3、saLinguaFrancaisentirelybeneficialforbothnativeandnon-nativeEnglishspeakers(NSandNNS)maytriggerheateddebate.Indeed,thisessayaimstoarguethatEnglishasalinguafrancamaynotbeentirelybeneficialforbothNSandNNSifEnglishservesasaLinguaFrancaanditmaybemorebeneficialforNSthanNNS.Inordertodemonstratethis,i
4、twillbeilluminatedthatEnglishasaLinguaFrancaisbeneficialforgeneralcommunicationamongnations.Whereastherearemorebenefitstonativespeakerssuchasmorejobopportunities,easiercommunicationbetweenEnglish-speakingcountriesandmoreinternationalattention.ForNNS,communicationistheonlybenefits.What'smore,asi
5、tisnotentirelybeneficial,someofthedrawbackssuchasconflictsforEnglishstandardanddisappearanceofminoritylanguageswillalsobediscussed.Apparently,EnglishasaLinguaFrancacouldensurecommunicationforbothNSandNNS.AccordingtoCrystal(2003)linguafrancawasstronglyneededinthetwentiethforpoliticalcommunicatio
6、n.Therearenumerousexamples,liketheUN,theWHOandUNESCOetc.(Crystal,2003:12).Intheseinternationalorganizations,Englishcanbeusedasamostspokenworkinglanguageforinternationalmeetingswhichwouldboostefficiencyandmaketheprocessmoresmoothly.Furthermore,inacademicandbusinessareas,alinguafrancaisalsoneeded
