3、cribethem,throughout,asfaraswaspossibleinaselectionoflanguagereallyusedbymen,and,atthesametime,tothrowoverthemacertaincolouringofimagination,wherebyordinarythingsshouldbepresentedtothemindinanunusualaspect;and,further,andaboveall,tomaketheseincidentsa

4、ndsituationsinterestingbytracinginthem,trulythoughnotostentatiously,theprimarylawsofournature:chiefly,asfarasregardsthemannerinwhichweassociateideasinastateofexcitement.Humbleandrusticlifewasgenerallychosen,because,inthatcondition,theessentialpassions

5、oftheheartfindabettersoilinwhichtheycanattaintheirmaturity,arelessunderrestraint,andspeakaplainerandmoreemphaticlanguage;Thelanguage,too,ofthesemenhasbeenadopted。。。becausesuchmenhourlycommunicatewiththebestobjectsfromwhichthebestpartoflanguageisorigin

6、allyderived;andbecause,fromtheirrankinsocietyandthesamenessandnarrowcircleoftheirintercourse,beinglessundertheinfluenceofsocialvanity,theyconveytheirfeelingsandnotionsinsimpleandunelaboratedexpressions.Accordingly,suchalanguage,arisingoutofrepeatedexp

7、erienceandregularfeelings,isamorepermanent,andafarmorephilosophicallanguage,thanthatwhichisfrequentlysubstitutedforitbyPoets,whothinkthattheyareconferringhonouruponthemselvesandtheirart,inproportionastheyseparatethemselvesfromthesympathiesofmen,andind
