4、.LewisinTheAllegoryofLove(Oxford,1936),however,theexactnatureofthemedievalidealofcourtlyloveishotlydebated,andthequestionofwhetherornotthemedievalconceptofloveisdifferentfromthatofotherhistoricalperiodsisalsounresolved.SeeRobertson’s“MedievalDoctrinesofLove,”(472-501)an
5、dWindeatt’s“Love,”(116-31).Inthisessay,Iwanttoclaimthat,attheveryleast,therewasaparticularmedievalformationoflovethatwasconstrainedbyspecificlanguageconventionsindefiningaspecialsocialsystemofsexuality.inmedievalromanceworldanditsrelationtoChaucer’stragicnarrative,Troil
6、usandCriseyde.Iwillbeoffering,inotherwords,whatisknowninliterarycriticismasastylisticreadingoragenrestudyofChaucer’sTroilus.BythisImeannotsimplyareadingthatseekstounderstandChaucer’s“tragedy”intermsofgenreperse,sincetherearemanykindsofliteratureinit.Somecriticshavepoint
