3、esinlexicalresearchandinthedesignandconstructionoflexiconsforpracticalNLPapplications.IwillsurveyrelevantresearchinEurope,AmericaandJapan;however,inapaperofthislengthitisnotpossibletoconsidereveryinstanceofaparticularapproach,soneitherthetextnorreferencesshouldbetakentobe
4、exhaustive.Inrecentyears,thelexiconhasbecomethefocusofconsiderableresearchin(computational)linguistictheoryandNLP;thereasonsforthistrendareboththeoreticalandpractical.Withinlinguistics,theroleofthelexiconhasincreasedasmoreandmorelinguisticgeneralisationshavebeenseentohave
5、alexicaldimension.WithinNLP,thelexiconhasincreasinglybecomethechief`bottleneck'intheproductionofhabitableNLPsystemsoeringanadequatevocabularyfortheintendedapplication.Thishasledtotheuseofmachine-readableversionsofconventionaldic-1tionariesinanattempttodevelopsubstantiall
6、exiconsforNLPinaresourceecientfashion.Atthesametime,dictionarypublishersandlexicographershaverealisedthepotentialbenetsofinformationtechnologyinthedictionaryproductionprocessandalsothepotentialnewmarketsfortheirproductsthatmightbecreatedbycommercialdevelopmentoflanguage
7、technologies.Thislatterpossibilitycreatestheveryexcitingopportunityforcollaborativeresearchanddevelopmentbetweentheseapparentlyratherdisparatecommunitieswhich,Ibelieve,wouldsubstantiallyre-movetheexistingbottleneckforNLPsystemsandwouldprovideamajorimpetustotheoreticalrese
