2、orOpticalBurstSwitchingJeyashankherRamamirtham,JonathanTurnerAbstractOpticalBurstSwitching(OBS)isanexperimentalnetworktechnologythatenablestheconstructionofveryhighcapacityrouters,usingopticaldatapathsandelectroniccontrol.Inthispaper,westudytwodesignsforwavelengthc
3、onvertingswitchesthataresuitableforuseinopticalburstswitchingsystemsandevaluatetheirperformance.Bothdesignsusetunablelaserstoimplementwavelengthconversion.Oneisastrictlynonblockingdesign,thatalsorequiresopticalcrossbars.ThesecondsubstitutesWavelengthGratingRouters(WG
4、R)fortheopticalcrossbars,reducingcost,butintroducingsomepotentialforblocking.WeshowhowtheroutingproblemfortheWGR-basedswitchescanbeformulatedasacombinatorialpuzzleorgame,inwhichthedesignofthegameboardcorrespondstothepatternofinterconnectionsusedtojointheinputsections
5、oftheswitchtotheoutputsections.Weusethistoshowhowtheinterconnectionpatternaffectstheperformanceoftheswitch,andtofacilitatethedesignofinterconnectionpatternsthatyieldthebestperformance.Ourresultsshowthatforatypicalswitchconfiguration,theWGR-baseddesigncandelivermoretha
