2、ilizationpolicy.Theoptimalpowerunderinflationtargetingisderivedunderperfectandimperfectinformation.Thefundamentaltrade-offbetweenaccountabil-ityandstabilizationdependsonthedegreeoftransparency,definedastheabilitytomonitorthecentralbank’sperformance.Multiplicativeuncertaintyincreasestheoptimalweightt

3、oplaceonachievinganinflationtarget.Duringthepastdecade,inflationtargetinghasgrowninpopularityamongcentralbankersandeconomists.WhileNewZealandwasoneofthefirstcountriestoadoptanexplicitinflationtargetingregime,itiscertainlynolongeralone.Canada,theCzechRepublic,Israel,Mexico,Sweden,andtheUKhavealladopted

4、someformofinflationtargeting,ashadFinlandandSpainpriortoenteringtheEuropeanMonetaryUnion.1Thetrendtowardsinflationtargetingbycentralbanks,aswellastheacademicinterestininflationtargeting,reflectstwothemes.Onetheme,thatofaccountability,hasstressedtheneedtosolvethecredibilityproblemsthatcanarisewhenpolic

5、yisdeterminedunderdiscretion.GeneralsolutionstotheaccountabilityproblemincludetheconservativecentralAnearlierversionofthispaperwaspreparedforaworkshoponmonetarypolicyheldattheReserveBankofNewZealandandwaspartiallysupportedbyagrantfromtheNationalScienceFoundation.Iwouldliketothanktheeditorandrefere
