3、ubstantialre-searchhasbeendoneinthepastforcomputer-aideddesignandmanufacturingintegration,suchasfeaturerecognition,CNCprogrammingandprocessplanning,thegapbetweenCADandCAMremainsunfilledinthefollowingaspects:·Rapidcreationof3Dmodelsandprototypes·Cost-effectiveproduct

4、ionofpatternsandmouldswithcomplexsurfaces(1)WhatRPMCanDoTosubstantiallyshortenthetimefordevelopingpatterns,moulds,andprototypes,somemanufacturingenterpriseshavestartedtouserapidproto-typingmethodsforcomplexpatternsmakingandcomponentprototyping.Overthepastfewyearsava

5、rietyofnewrapidmanufacturingtechnologies,generallycalledRapidPrototypingandManufacturing(RPM),haveemerged;thetechnologiesdevelopedincludeStereolithography(SL),SelectiveLaserSintering(SLS),FusedDepositionModeling(FDM),LaminatedObjectManufacturing(LOM),andThreeDimensi

6、onalPrinting(3DPrinting).ThesetechnologiesarecapableofdirectlygeneratingphysicalobjectsfromCADdatabases.Theyhaveacommonimportantfeature:theprototypepartisproducedbyaddingmaterialsratherthanremovingmaterials.Thissimplifiesthe3Dpartproducingprocessesto2Dlayeraddingpro

7、cessessothatapartcanbeproduceddirectlyfromitscomputermodel.(2)TheBasicProcessofRPMApartisfirstmodeledbyageometricmodelersuchasasolidmodeler.Thepartisthenmathematicallysectioned(sliced)intoaseriesofparallelcross-sectionpieces.Foreachpiecethecuringorbindingpathsaregen
