1、Editor’sIntroduction:TheStudyofDiscourse:AnIntroductionTheEmergenceofaNewCross-DisciplineInthemid-1960s,thehumanitiesandthesocialscienceswitnessedaremarkablysynchronousparadigmshiftwiththebirthofseveralnewbutmutuallyrelated‘interdisciplines’suchassemiotics,psycholinguistics,sociolinguistics
2、,pragmaticsaswellasthestudyofdiscourse.Thearticlescollectedinthevolumesofthisbookareprominentcontributionstothelatterfieldofstudy,traditionallycalledDiscourseAnalysis,butmoreappropriatelylabeledDiscourseStudies,becauseitisnotlimitedtoamethodofanalysis,asisthecaseforContentAnalysisinthesocia
3、lsciences,butalsohasimportanttheoreticalobjectives.Andbecausethestudyofdiscoursemanifestsitselfinvirtuallyalldisciplinesinthehumanitiesandsocialsciences,itisappropriatetospeakofanew‘cross-discipline’orevena‘trans-discipline’.Thestoryofthisnewfieldofstudyhasbeentoldmanytimes,andisasexcitinga
4、sthecontributionsithasmadetoourinsightsintolanguageuse,communicationandsocialinteraction.Forsomeofthemotherandsisterdisciplines,thisstoryoftheemergenceofthestudyofdiscoursemaybesummarizedasfollows.AnthropologyAlreadyintheearly1960s,amongthefirsttorecognizetherelevanceofthestudyofdiscoursean
5、thropologistssuchasDellHymes(1972)becameinterestedintheethnographicstudyofcommunicativeevents(beyondthetraditionalstudyofmythsandfolklore),adirectionofresearchfollowedbymanyotheranthropologistsunderthelabelofthe‘ethnographyofspeaking’(orthe‘ethnographyofcommunication’;Bauman&Sherzer,1974;Sa
6、ville-Troike,1982)andthenmorebroadlywithinlinguisticanthropology(Duranti,2001).1LinguisticsLinguistswerenotlaggingfarbehindduringthelate1960s,whensomeofthemrealizedthattheuseoflanguageobviouslywasnotreducedtothestructuresofisolated,abstract,inventedsentences–aswasthecaseinstructuralandgener
7、ativegrammars–butneededanalysesofstructures‘beyondthesentence’andofwhole‘texts’,forinstancetoaccountforanaphoraandcoherence.Whereasinitiallystilllargelywithintheformalparadigmof‘textgrammars’,alsothislinguisticapproachsoonmergedwiththeotherapproachestoam
