3、andresourcesofitspredecessor,theHealthOrganization,whichhadbeenanagencyoftheLeagueofNations.MissionTheWHO'sconstitutionstatesthatitsobjective"istheattainmentbyallpeoplesofthehighestpossiblelevelofhealth."[1]Itsmajortaskistocombatdisease,especiallykeyinfectiousdiseases,andt
4、opromotethegeneralhealthofthepeopleoftheworld.EstablishmentTheWorldHealthOrganizationisoneoftheoriginalagenciesoftheUnitedNations,itsconstitutionformallycomingintoforceonthefirstWorldHealthDay,(7April1948),whenitwasratifiedbythe26thmemberstate.[2]Priortothisitsoperations,a
5、swellastheremainingactivitiesoftheLeagueofNationsHealthOrganization,wereunderthecontrolofanInterimCommissionfollowinganInternationalHealthConferenceinthesummerof1946.[3]ThetransferwasauthorizedbyaResolutionoftheGeneralAssembly.[4]TheepidemiologicalserviceoftheFrenchOfficeI
6、nternationald'HygiènePubliquewasincorporatedintotheInterimCommissionoftheWorldHealthOrganizationon1January1947.[5]SummaryofactivitiesAswellascoordinatinginternationaleffortstomonitoroutbreaksofinfectiousdiseases,suchasSARS,malaria,andAIDS,theWHOalsosponsorsprogramstopreven
7、tandtreatsuchdiseases.TheWHOsupportsthedevelopmentanddistributionofsafeandeffectivevaccines,pharmaceuticaldiagnostics,anddrugs.Afterover2decadesoffightingsmallpox,theWHOdeclaredin1980thatthediseasehadbeeneradicated-thefirstdiseaseinhistorytobeeliminatedbyhumaneffort.TheWHO
