2、eagreementonWTOaccessionwiththeUnitedStates(onNovember7><15,1999)andwiththeEuropeanUnion(onMay19,2000).AlthoughChinastillneedstoconcludethenegotiationswithafewmorecountries,itisclearthatChinahassuccessfullycompletedthemostimportantanddifficultstepstoentertheworldtradeorganization.China’sWT
3、Omembershipisjustamatteroftime.Needlesstosay,China’saccessiontotheWTOwillhavesignificantimpactsforbothChinaandtheworldeconomy.Thereareatleastthreeimportantreasonsforeconomists,aswellaspolicy-makers,tostudyandunderstandthesignificanceofandimplicationsofChina’sWTOaccession.First,Chinaisabige
4、conomy.Anychangesinsuchahugeeconomywillmostlikelyaffecttheequilibriumoftheworldmarket,eventheworldeconomicsystem.ItisobviouslythatChina’sWTOmembershipwillbringbigchangesinChina’seconomicperformanceandstructure.Thesechanges,inturn,willaffecttheworldeconomicperformanceandbusinessstructure.Th
5、isisoneofthereasonswhytheWTOnegotiationswiththeUnitedStatesandtheEUtooksolong.Secondly,Chinaisadevelopingcountry.China’sdecisionsandactionsregardingWTOwillaffectthedecisionsandactionsofotherdevelopingcountries.IfChinaopensupitsmarketsmorethanmostdevelopingcountries,itwillbringpressureonoth
6、erdevelopingcountriestodolikewise.Ontheotherhand,ifChinamaintainsmoreprotectionforitsdomesticmarkets,itmayincreasethebargainingpowerofdevelopingcountriesintheworldtradingsystem.Thirdly,Chinaisatransitionaleconomy.HowtheWTOaccessaffectChina’seconomywillalsoprovideexperiencesandlessonstoothe
7、rtransitionaleconomies.Astheseventhlargesteconomyandaneconomyinprocessofindustrializationandtransition,China’sWTOmembershipwillhavesignificantimpactsonitsowneconomicdevelopmentandreformsaswellasonothereconomiesintheworld.WhatwillbetheimpactsofChina’sWTOaccessi
