3、energythroughtheconversionofthisorganicmatterintocompoundsthatcontainlowerenergy,suchascarbondioxideandwater,inaprocesscalledrespiration.Aswell,avariablenumberofmicroorganismsinthesystemobtainenergybyconvertingammonianitrogentonitratenitrogeninaprocesstermednitrification.Thisconsortiumofmicroor

4、ganisms,thebiologicalcomporientoftheprocess,isknowncollectivelyasactivatedsludge・Theoverallgoaloftheactivated-sludgeprocessistoremovesubstancesthathaveademandforoxygenfromthesystem.Thisisaccomplishedbythemetabolicreactions(synthesis-respirationandnitrificaction)ofthemicroorganisms,theseparation
