3、ctionanddiagnosisformedium-speeddieselenginesisimportanttoensurereliableoperationthroughoutthecourseoftheirservice.Thisworkpresentsaninvestigationofthedieselenginecombustionrelatedfaultdetectioncapabilityofcrankshafttorsionalvibration.Theencodersignal,oftenusedforshaftspeedmeasurement,hasbeenuse
4、dtoconstructtheinstantaneousangularspeed(IAS)waveform,whichactuallyrepresentsthesignatureofthetorsionalvibration.EarlierstudieshaveshownthattheIASsignalanditsfastFouriertransform(FFT)analysisareeffectiveformonitoringengineswithlessthaneightcylinders.Theapplicabilitytomedium-speedengines,however,
5、isstronglycontestedduetothehighnumberofcylindersandlargemomentofinertia.ThereforetheeffectivenessoftheFFT-basedapproachhasfurtherbeenenhancedbyimprovingthesignalprocessingtodeterminetheIASsignalandsubsequentlytestedona16-cylinderengine.Inaddition,anovelmethodofpresentation,basedonthepolarcoordin
6、atesystemoftheIASsignal,hasalsobeenintroduced;toimprovethediscriminationfeaturesofthefaultscomparedtotheFFT-basedapproachoftheIASsignal.Thepaperdiscussestwotypicalexperimentalstudieson16-and20-cylinderengines,withandwithoutfaults,andthediagnosisresultsbytheproposedpolarpresentationmethod.Theresu
