2、lanrl,OH44IO6(USA)(Received9August1989;inrevisedform23March1990)AbstractTheelectrochemicalbehaviorofvariousnon-aqueousorganicelectrolytesystemshasbeeninvesti-gatedusinginertmetalelectrodes.Thesystemsstudiedincludedpropylenecarbonate,dimethoxyethaneandtetrahydrofuransolutionsofLiClO,,L&F,,LiSO
3、,CF,andBu,NClO,.Theelectrodemetalsincludedpolycrystallinegoldandsilver.Varioustechniquesincludingcyclicvoltammetry,FTIRandXPSwereusedtocharacterizethemainelectrochemicalreactionsthatoccurinthesesystems.Severalseparatefilmformingprocesseshavebeenidentified,includingreductionofsolvent,thesalt,a
4、ndtracesofoxygenandwater.Thesurfacefilmsformedintheseprocessesleadtotheapparentstabilityofthesesystemsatlowpotentials.LiUPDwasalsoexaminedandwasfoundtobecontrolledbythenatureofthesurfacefilmsthroughwhichlithiumisdeposited.INTRODUCTIONThereisincreasinginterestincarryingoutelectrochemicalreacti
5、onsinnon-aque-oussystems[l],bothbecauseofthewiderangeofpotentialsthatcanbereachedbeforesolventdecompositionoccursinthesesystemswhencomparedwithaqueoussystems,andbecauseofthesolubilityand/orstabilityrequirementsofmanyreagents.Theelectrochemicalbehaviorofnoblemetalelectrodesinnon-aqueoussystems
6、isimportantindefiningthepotentialwindowsavailableandthereactivityofthesolvents,saltsandcontaminantssuchaswaterandoxygenthatmaybepresent.Theobjectivehereistosurveythebehaviorofnoblemetalelectrodesinlithiumionsolutionsinanumberofsolventsystemsofcommercialimportancetothebatteryindustry.Theemphas
