2、ingjournalsdeclinesverysharplywithage.Thereisnodifferencebyageintheprobabilitythatanarticlesubmittedtoaleadingjournalwillbeaccepted.Ratesofdecliningproductivityarenogreateramongtheverytoppublishersthanamongothers,andtheprobabilityofacceptanceisincreasinglyrelatedtotheauthor’squalit

3、yratherthantheauthor’sage.Itiswellknownthatproductivitydeclineswithageinawiderangeofactivities.Lehman(1953)suggestsanearlypeakinproductivityinavarietyofscientificandartisticendeavors,andDiamond(1986)documentsthepatternforseveralscholarlypursuits.LevinandStephan(1992)provideclearevi

4、dencethatthisdeclineexistsevenaftercarefulattemptstoaccountforindividualandcohortdifferences.Fair(1994)findsdeclinesinphysicalabilityamongeliterunners,asdoesLydall(1968,pp.113passim)inphysicalabilitiesofthepopulationgenerally.Inthisstudyweexamineproductivitydeclinesinourownfield.Th

5、emainnewresultsarisefromouruseoftwodifferenttypesofinformation,theequivalentofhouseholdandestablishmentdata,tostudythestonefieldoveressentiallythesameperiodoftime.SectionIdiscussesthegeneralresultsonagingandproductivity,whereassectionIIpresentsevidenceoftheimportanceofheterogeneity
