2、lismofacitycanbeseenastheprocessoftransformingallthematerialsandcommoditiesforsustainingthecityseconomicactivity.ThispaperattemptstoincorporateresourceandmaterialflowanalysistoinvestigateTaipeiareasurbansustainabilityduetourbanconstruction.Thematerialflows(sandandgravel,cement,asphalt,andc
3、onstructionwaste)duringthepastdecadeforconstructingmajorurbanengineeringprojectssuchasroads,bridge,MRT,floodpreventionprojects,stormdrainageandseweragepipes,andbuildingsareanalyzedforTaipeimetropolis.Inordertoevaluatethecontributoryvalueofmaterialflowstotheecologicaleconomicsystem,emergy(s
4、pelledwithanM;previouslyknownasembodiedenergy)evaluationisincorporatedinthisresearch.Aframeworkofindicatorsincludingcategoriesof:(1)intensityofresourceconsumption;(2)inflow/outflowratio;(3)urbanlivability;(4)efficiencyofurbanmetabolism;and(5)emergyevaluationofurbanmetabolismisdevelopedforme
5、asuringtheeffectofurbanconstructiononTaipeissustainability.Theconsumptionofsandandgravelisapproximately90%ofthetotalconstructionmaterialused,andthegenerationofconstructionwasteinTaipeiexceeds30×106tonperannum.TheemergyvalueofconstructionmaterialsinTaipeiisequivalentto46%oftotalemergyuse.
6、AlthoughthelivabilityinTaipeihasimproved,thesignificantamountofconstructionwasteremainsanimportantenvironmentalissue.TherecyclingandreuseofconstructionwastecannotonlycreatecircularpatternofurbanmetabolismbutisalsovitaltothesustainabledevelopmentofTaipei.©2003ElsevierScienceB.V.Allrightsre
