4、tomisticmechanismofthetransitionisspin-like.Straincouplingisalsoacommonmechanismforthecouplingbetweenmultipleorderparametersinasinglesystem.Aswellaschangesonthecrystalstructurescale,phasetransitionsmodifythemicrostructureofmaterials,leadingtoanomalousmesoscopicfeaturesatdomainboun
5、daries.ThemesostructureofadomainwallisstudiedexperimentallyusingX-raydiffraction,andinterpretedtheoreticallyusingGinzburg±Landautheory.Oneimportantconsequenceoftwinmeso-structuresistheirmodi®edtransportpropertiesrelativetothebulk.Domainwallmotionalsoprovidesamechanismforsuperelast
6、icbehaviourinferroelastics.Atsurfaces,therelaxationsthatoccurcanbedescribedintermsoforderparametersandLandautheory.Thisleadstoanexponentialpro®leofsurfacerelaxations.Thisinturnleadstoanexponentialinteractionenergybetweensurfaces,whichcan,iflargeenough,destabilizesymmetricalmorphol
7、ogiesinfavourofaplateletmorphology.Surfacerelaxationsmayalsoaffectthebehaviouroftwinwallsastheyintersectsurfaces,sincethesurfacerelaxationmayleadtoanincompatibilityofthetwodomainsatthesurface,generatinglargestrainsattherelaxation.Landautheorymayalsobeextendedtodescribethekineticso
