5、lcultures(6,7)Abstract.Thedistributionofinorganicnitrogenandphosphorusandbioassayandoceanicparticulatematter(8,9)experimentsbothshowthatnitrogenisthecriticallimitingfactortoalgalgrowthhavereportedhighlyvariableratiosofandeutrophicationincoastalmarinewaters.Abouttwicetheamountofphosph
6、atenitrogentophosphorus.Theseratiosascanbeusedbythealgaeisnormallypresent.Thissurplusresultsfromthelowaresomewhatdifficulttointerpretinnitrogentophosphorusratiointerrigenouscontributions,includinghumanwaste,oceanicparticulatematter,sincelivingandfromthefactthatphosphorusregeneratesmo
