3、ntbusinessbutbeabletorespondeffectivelyinthefaceofunanticipatedchange.Findingindividualstofilltheseleadershiprolesischallengingforatleasttworeasons.First,becauseitismorecommonforindividualstoworkformanycompaniesoverthecourseoftheircareers,organizationsmustmakeeffortstoidentifyand

4、retainhigh-potentialemployeesiftheyaretoavoidattritionoftalent.Eveniftheyaresuccessfulinrecruitingtalentedoutsiders,theseindividualswilllackthesamefamiliaritywiththeorganizationanditsstrategy.Second,overtime,downsizinghaseliminatedlayersofmanagementhierarchy;thepositionsthatremai

5、narecharacterizedbyagreatdealofresponsibilityandcomplexity.Assumingthathigh-potentialmanagers’currentassignmentswilladequatelypreparethemfortheirnextpromotionisunrealisticinthecontextoftoday’srelativelyflatorganizations;additionaldevelopmentaleffortsarerequiredtoensurehighpotenti

6、alshavethenecessaryskillsforfutureleadershiproles.Despitethesechallenges,researchsuggeststhatdevelopingleadersismoreimportantthanevertoanorganization’scontinuingsuccess.Manyorganizationshaveevenidentifiedthestrategicmanagementoftalentastheirkeycompetitiveadvantage.1Successfullead
