2、thodthatoffersthoroughseismicdemandandcapacitypredictioncapabilitybyusingaseriesofnonlineardynamicanalysesunderamultiplyscaledsuiteofgroundmotionrecords.Realizationofitsopportunitiesrequiresseveralstepsandtheuseofinnovativetech-niquesateachoneofthem.Usinganine-storysteelmomen
3、t-resistingframewithfracturingconnectionsasatestbed,thereaderisguidedthrougheachstepofIDA:(1)choosingsuitablegroundmotionintensitymeasuresandrepresentativedamagemeasures,(2)usingappropriatealgorithmstoselecttherecordscaling,(3)em-ployingproperinterpolationand(4)summarizationt
4、echniquesformultiplerecordstoestimatetheprobabilitydistributionofthestructuraldemandgiventheseismicintensity,and(5)defininglimit-states,suchasthedynamicglobalsysteminstabil-ity,tocalculatethecorrespondingcapacities.Finally,(6)theresultscanbeusedtogainintuitionforthestructuralb
5、ehavior,highlightingtheconnectionbetweenthestaticpushover(SPO)andthedynamicresponse,or(7)theycanbeintegratedwithconventionalprobabilisticseismichazardanalysis(PSHA)toestimatemeanannualfrequenciesoflimit-stateexceedance.Buildinguponthisdetailedexamplebasedonthenine-storystruct
6、ure,acompletecommentaryisprovided,discussingthechoicesthatareavailabletotheuser,andshowingtheirimplicationsforeachstepoftheIDA.INTRODUCTIONAnimportantissueinperformance-basedearthquakeengineering(PBEE)istheestimationofstructuralperformanceunderseismicloads,inparticulartheesti
7、mationofthemeanannualfrequency(MAF)ofexceedingaspecifiedlevelofstructuraldemand(e.g.,themaximum,overallstories,peakinterstorydriftratioqmax)oracertainlimit-statecapacity(e.g.,globaldynamicinstability).Apromisingmethodthathasrecentlyrisentomeettheseneedsisincrementaldy-namicana
