3、ingonthesurfaceofagoodmetal.Itisanintrinsicallytwo-dimensionalexcitationwhoseelectromagneticfielddecaysexponentiallywithdistancefromthesurface.Inthepast,itwaspossibletostudyonlythe(far-field)scatteredlightproducedbytheinteractionofsurfacepolaritonswithsurfacefeatures.Onlywi
4、ththedevelopmentofscanningnear-fieldopticalmicroscopydiditbecomepossibletomeasurethesurfacepolaritonfielddirectlyincloseproximitytothesurfacewheretheSPPexists.Hereweoverviewthenear-fieldstudiesofsurfacepolaritonsonrandomlyroughandnanostructuredsurfaces,theoreticalmodelsofSPP
5、interactionwithsurfacefeatures,andSPPapplicationsinnovelphotonictechnologies.Surfacepolaritonscattering,interference,backscattering,andlocalizationwillbediscussed,aswellasconceptsofsurfacepolaritonopticsandpolaritoniccrystals.Surfacepolaritonsarefindinganeverincreasingnumb
