2、eived23October2003;accepted11March2004WastemanagementinthebuildingindustryinHongKonghasbecomeamajorenvironmentalissueinrecentyears.Ofparticularconcernistheincreasingamountofconstructionanddemolition(C&D)wastebeingdumpedatlandfillsites.Greaterconsiderationmustbegiventowast
3、egenerationandmanagementattheplanningstageofabuildingdevelopmenttoreducewastagelevels.ThecausesandquantitiesofbuildingconstructionwastegeneratedonpublichousingbuildingsitesinHongKonghavebeenanalysed.Fivepublichousingconstructionsiteswereselectedforthestudybyregularsitevis
4、its.Timberboardsusedinformworkwerethemostsignificantwastetyperequiringdisposalfollowedbywastederivedfromwettrades.Wastegenerationcouldbesignificantlyreducedbytheuseofprecastingandsystemformworks.Themajorcausesofwasteswereimproperpreparationandhandling,misuse,andincorrectp
5、rocessing.Ingeneral,littleon-sitewastesortingwascarriedout.Appropriateplanningincludingthepreparationofadetailedwastemanagementplanisessentialforeffectivewasteminimization.Attheconstructionstage,betterhousekeepingandmorevigorouson-sitesortingofinertfromnon-inertmaterialsa
