2、ughitwheneverynodepairsustainsauniformbidirectionaltrafficbetweenthemonshortestpaths.Weshowthatnodalloadcanbeexpressedintermsofthemoreelementarynotionofanode’sdescentsinbreadth-first-search(BFSorshortest-path)trees,andstudyboththedescentandnodal-loaddistri
3、butionsinthecaseofscale-freenetworks.Ourtreatmentisbothsemi-analytical(combiningagenerating-functionformalismwithsimulation-derivedBFSbranchingprobabilities)andcomputationalforthedescentdistribution;itisexclusivelycomputationalinthecaseoftheloaddistribu
4、tion.Ourmainresultisthattheloaddistribution,eventhoughitcanbedisguisedasapower-lawthroughsubtle(butinappropriate)binningoftherawdata,isinfactasuccessionofsharplydelineatedprobabilitypeaks,eachofwhichcanbeclearlyinterpretedasafunctionoftheunderlyingBFSde
