3、.Oneofthefirstmanagementtasksformulticastistoverifyitsavailabilityinthenetwork.Thistaskisusuallyreferredtoasreachabilitymonitoring.Reachabilityensuresthatsourcescanreachallexistingandpotentialgroupmem-bers.Reachabilityalsoimpliesthatreceivershavemulticastconnectivityandcanreachallsourc

4、es.Asaresult,verifyingreachabilitybecomesveryimportanttomaintainavailabilityandrobustnessofthemulticastservicebetweensourcesandreceivers.Inthispaper,wepresentanapplicationlayermechanismtomonitormulticastreachability.First,wejustifytheneedforreachabilitymonitoringsystems.Then,wepresent

5、ourmonitoringsystemcalledsdr-monitor.Sdr-monitorleveragesanexistingapplicationandprovidesclosetoreal-timereachabilitymonitoringforthemulticastinfrastructure.Itisthefirstsystemthatisdevelopedanddeployedformonitoringmulticastreachability.Wepresentthearchitectureofthesystemandthendiscussi

6、tsoperation.Finally,weincludeourevaluationsonadatasetthatwecollectedusingthissys-tem.Withthisanalysis,wepresentlongtermreachabilitycharacteristicsofmulticastinfrastructureduringafouryearmonitoringperiodbetween1999and2003anddiscusspotentialcausesforreachabilityproblems.Ó2004ElsevierB.V
