2、hatthestudyofIcelandichasbeenneglectedinBritain,therecanbenodoubtthatitmightwithadvantagebecomemuchmoregeneralthanithasbeen.Thereareseveralgoodreasonswhyitshouldbeso.TheScandinavianinfluencewastheearliest,andoneofthestrongest,ofthoseoutwardforceswhichhavegonetothemakingofmodernEnglish,and
3、fortheproperinvestigationandappreciationofthisaknowledgeofIcelandicisofthefirstimportance.Notonlydoesitsupplyalinguisticbasisforsuchastudy;itisalsothesourceofmuchoftheinformationnecessaryfortheunderstandingofthatperiodofBritishhistory.Initself,too,OldIcelandicliterature,bothinpoetryandpro
4、se,presentsawealthofinterestingmaterial,whichinsomerespectsstandsunrivalledamongtheliteraturesofmediaevalEurope,andwithoutwhichourknowledgeoftheancientNorthwouldbethemerestshadowofwhatitis.ThisimportantlanguageandliteraturefirstbecameeasilyaccessibletotheEnglishstudentwiththepublication(i
5、n1869–74)oftheIcelandicDictionarybegunbyRichardCleasby,andcompletedfortheClarendonPressbyGudbrandVigfusson.ThisstillremainsthefullestrecordofIcelandicasawhole,althoughsomeportionsoftheoldervocabularyhavebeenmorefullydealtwithinlaterworks.Forbeginners,however,andforthosewhoseinterestschief
6、lycentreintheoldIcelandicprose-writings,somemoreconvenientandcheaperworkhasbeengreatlyneeded,andthepresentvolumeisintendedtosupplythiswant.InthemainitisfoundedontheOxfordDictionary,andhasbeencompiledonthegeneralprincipleofincludingallthosewordswhichtheordinarystudentofIcelandicislikelytom
7、eetwithinthecourseofhisreading.WiththeexceptionoftheEddapoems,thepurelypoeticvocabularyhasforthemostpartbeenomitted,aswellasanumberofcompoundsoccurringonlyinlegal,theological,ortechnicalworks.Thelinehasnotbeenverystrictlydrawn,however,andindoubtfulcasesinsertionhasb
