2、poesy,butofhighandsacredtruth’.1OverthenextfiftyyearshisstatusasanEnglishclassicwasconfirmedininnumerableprintingsofhisworks,anthologies,andeventuallyscholarlystudies.By1950,however,itseemedthathistimewasover.AtaneventtomarkthecentenaryofWordsworth’sdeath,Lion
3、elTrilling,oneoftheforemostAmericancriticsofhisgeneration,summedupwhathetooktobethecurrentperceptionofthepoet:‘Wordsworthisnotattractiveandnotanintellectualpossibility.’2AlthoughTrilling’slecturewentontodemonstratethatthiswasnothisownview,hisdecisiveandmemor
4、ableformulationsoundedright,asifKeble’swordsontheplaqueinGrasmereChurchwerebeinggiventheirsadbutinevitableaddendum.Butsuchhasnotbeenthejudgementofhistory.Sincethemutedcelebrationsin1950,shiftsinintellectualconcernshavebroughttheRomanticsintonewfocusandhavere
5、discoveredWordsworthasafully‘intellectuallypossible’figure.Westernculture’spreoccupationwithidentityandtheself;thelinguisticturnofmuchcurrenttheory;theinterestinpowerandpoliticsandnationhood;thereturntohistory;environmentalissues–allofthesedominantfeaturesoft
6、heculturallandscapeofthelasthalf-centuryhavebeenmappedacrosstheterrainofWordsworth’spoetryandprose.Thattoday’s‘Wordsworth’(thenameconstitutingtheobjectofstudyinitstotality–poetry,prose,biography,historicalcontext,criticalhistory)issubstantiallydifferentfromt
7、hatof1950ispartlyduetothelaboursofeditors.AsKeithHanley’schapterinthiscollectionspellsout,multi-volumeeditionsofWordsworth’spoetryandprose,aswellaseditionsofhislettersandofColeridge’sandofothermembersoftheircircle,haveenormouslyenlargedourfactualknowledge.As
