3、phytoplanktonwithflowcytometrybyinherentcellpropertiessuchascellsizeandchlorophyllautofluorescence,specificfluorescentdyes,andnewlydevelopedmolecularprobesandenzymesubstrates.Itisreportedhownitrogenandironlimitationaswellastheeffectofcopperpollutioncouldbederivedfromchangesincellin

4、herentproperties.EffectsofCuwerealsorecordedbymonitoringcellmembranepotentialsandesteraseactivity.Photo-syntheticcapacityofalgaewasassessedbychangesinchlorophyllfluorescencewiththeelectrontransportinhibitorDCMU,byacytometricadaptationofthepump-and-probeapproach,andmolecularprobesfo

5、rRubisco.Antibodieswerealsoappliedtomarknon-terminalstagesinthecellDNAreplicationcycle,todetectnon-proliferatingcells,toassessDNAdam-agecausedbyUV-Bradiationandtoquantifydiatomstickiness.Fluoresceindiacetateprovedusefultodiscriminatemeta-bolicallyactivefrominactivecellsandtoreveals

6、trategiesofdarksurvivalinalgae.TheactivityofalkalinephosphatasewasrecordedbyanewfluorigenicsubstrateELF,andpolyclonalantibodiesagainstnitratereductase(NR)providedmea-surementsoftheNRabundance.Anoutlookwillshowhowrecentdevelopmentsinmolecularprobesmightaffectthefutureanalysisofmarin
