3、mputersystems.Thispaperbrie ydescribesthemaincharacteristicsoftheevolvingSCItechnologyandtheappliedhardware.SeveralSCIcommunicationtopologiesarestudied.Performancemeasurementsandtheachievedbenchmarkresultsarepresented.1IntroductionTheSCIcommunicationtechnologycombinedwithstate-of-the-a

4、rtpersonalcomputersandserversys-temsbuildsanewenvironmentforscalablecomputingperformanceandhighavailabilityatrelativelylowcosts.Comparedtotraditionalcommunicationnetworks(Ethernet,ATM,FDDI,:::)usedinclustersornetworksofworkstations(COW/NOW)theSCItechnologyprovidesamuchbettercom-municat

5、ionperformanceintermsofhigherbandwidthandlowerlatency.Commoditycommunicationnetworkstypicallyhavelatenciesmeasuredinhundredsofmicrosecondsandamaximumbandwidthofabout10Mbyte/s.Furthermore,SCI'sadvancedcommunicationmethodsbasedonremotemem-oryaccessallowsanecientimplementationofonesidedc

6、ommunicationsusedinMPI-2andothertechniqueslikeactivemessages.TheSCIstandard(ScalableCoherentInterface,IEEEStd.1596-1992)isbasedonfastunidirec-tionalpoint-to-pointlinksandswitches.ASCIdeviceconsistsoftwolinksthatoperateconcurrentlywithacommunicationbandwidthofupto1Gbit/sforserialberoro
