2、fulinmanyscenarios,aMANETconnectedtotheInternetismoredesirable.Thisinterconnectionisachievedbyusinggateways,whichactasbridgesbe-tweenaMANETandtheInternet.BeforeamobilenodecancommunicatewithanInternethostitneedstofindaroutetoagateway.Thus,agatewaydiscov-erymec
3、hanismisrequired.InthispapertheMANETroutingprotocolAdhocOn-DemandDistanceVector(AODV)isextendedtoachievetheinterconnec-tionbetweenaMANETandtheInternet.Moreover,thepaperinvestigatesandcomparesthreeapproachesforgatewaydiscovery.Thequestionofwhethertheconfigurat
4、ionphasewiththegatewayshouldbeinitiatedbythegateway,bythemobilenodeorbymixingthesetwoapproachesisbeingdiscussed.Wehaveim-plementedandsimulatedthesethreemethodsandwediscusstheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofthethreealternatives.1IntroductionAmobileadhocnetwork(MA
5、NET)isanautonomousnetworkthatcanbeformedwithoutneedofanyestablishedinfrastructureorcentralizedadministration.Itnormallyconsistsofmobilenodes,equippedwithawirelessinterface,thatcommunicatewitheachother.Becausethesekindsofnetworksareveryspontaneousandself-orga
6、nizing,theyareexpectedtobeveryuseful.ItisalsohighlylikelythatauserofthenetworkwillhavetheneedtoconnecttotheInternet.TheInternetEngineeringTaskForce(IETF)hasproposedseveralroutingproto-colsforMANETs,suchasAdhocOn-DemandDistanceVector(AODV)[1],DynamicSourceRou
7、ting(DSR)[2],OptimizedLinkStateRoutingProtocol(OLSR)[3]andTopologyDisseminationBasedonReverse-PathForwarding(TBRPF)[4].However,theseprotocolsweredesignedforcommunicationwithinanautonomousMANET,soaroutingprotocolneedstobemodifiedinordertoachieveroutingbetweena
8、mobiledeviceinaMANETandahostdeviceinawirednetwork(e.g.theInternet).Toachievethisnetworkinterconnection,gatewaysthatunderstandnotonlytheIPsuite,butalsotheMANETprotocolstack,areneeded.Thus,agatewa
